Office hours are easier to use when you arrive with a specific question. Bring the assignment brief, your current attempt and the point where your understanding stopped. That gives the conversation a place to begin.

Instead of saying “I do not understand anything,” try “I can explain the first step, but I am unsure why the second follows.” For writing, show a paragraph or an outline and ask whether the argument is clear. Specific questions invite specific answers.

Write down the advice in your own words before you leave. If you agree on a next step, say it aloud to check that you understood. You can always ask for a recommended example or reading.

You do not need to wait until you are struggling badly. A short conversation early in the term can help you choose a better direction before a small problem grows.
